How to dress on a Virgin Voyages cruise

How to pack and dress for your next dreamy getaway.

Virgin Voyages

It’s the question that always seems to come up before vacation: What do I wear on a cruise?

For some, especially first-time cruisers, packing sparks excitement and endless outfit possibilities. For others, it means late-night Google searches trying to figure out what's appropriate to bring.

Here's the good news: when it comes to what to wear on a Virgin Voyages cruise, there's no need to stress. We don't do formal nights or strict dress codes; instead, we encourage you to wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Whether that's dressing up for dinner, embracing your boldest vacation style, or keeping things casual from sunrise to sunset, your style is your style.

We do ask that everyone keeps the comfort of fellow Sailors in mind while enjoying our shared spaces. Have fun with your look and express yourself while keeping it considerate of those around you. On occasion, we host private groups or themed events in designated venues where attire may be a little more adventurous — if you're joining one of those celebrations, we ask that those bolder looks stay within those event spaces. Similarly, we encourage all Sailors to wear more than a bathing suit when dining in our restaurants, and to wear footwear while enjoying the indoor spaces around the ship. Beyond that, relax. Dress up. Dress down. Just dress. From date night at one of our award-winning restaurants, to our shipwide Pajama Party and the iconic Scarlet Night, there's no shortage of opportunities to express yourself — and there's no one right way to show up.

We throw dress codes overboard

Sure, dressing up can be fun. But we believe the obligation to wear cocktail dresses, suits, and ties belongs at weddings and formal galas, not on vacation. Our voyages are casual, inclusive, and come-as-you-are experiences where how much fun you're having matters far more than what's hanging in your closet.

So what does that actually mean?

It means we don't have traditional formal dining rooms or mandatory formal nights. Even at our elevated restaurants, like our onboard steakhouse The Wake, you'll fit right in wearing whatever feels most like you.

Scarlet Night is our signature celebration, where the ship transforms into a sea of red. The only suggestion? Wear something red. Whether that's glamorous, playful, daring, or delightfully understated is entirely up to you.

Dress like you on our exclusively adult voyages

Without a dress code telling you what to wear, you might still be wondering: What should I pack for a Virgin Voyages cruise?

That's the beauty of it. Wear whatever makes you feel most like yourself. Maybe that's a tailored suit. Maybe it's resort wear, athleisure, or your favorite vacation outfit you've been waiting for the perfect occasion to wear.

Comfort is key, so you'll want outfits for different parts of your day. But don't be afraid to step outside your everyday wardrobe. An adults-only vacation is the perfect excuse to take a few style risks. Pull out that glittering vest you've never had the chance to wear back home, or slip into that colorful outfit that's been waiting for its moment. Then grab a specialty coffee at The Grounds Club to get you ready for the night ahead, or head to The Dock House (after a relaxing day at Redemption Spa) for Mediterranean-inspired bites.

Our philosophy is simple: wear what feels like you. Express yourself, stay comfortable, and help keep our shared spaces welcoming for everyone.

Clothing suggestions and what to pack for a cruise

There may not be a right or wrong way to dress, but you'll still need to decide what goes in your suitcase. Having complete freedom can actually make packing a little harder. Consider the length of your voyage and your itinerary to help plan what you'll need.

Workout gear

It's true, your voyage includes access to group fitness classes and our state-of-the-art fitness center, the B-Complex. You may spot Sailors embracing retro workout gear, but there's absolutely no pressure. Wear whatever helps you move comfortably.

Daytime wear

Think about whether you'll spend the day relaxing onboard or exploring ashore. Casual essentials like swimwear, cover-ups, tank tops, T-shirts, shorts, skirts, sandals, and a hat are all great choices. Lightweight beachwear works perfectly for warm-weather itineraries. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses if you'll be soaking up the sun.

Shore excursions

The world knows them as shore excursions; we call them Shore Things, and we partner with locals to offer the best and brightest activities on every port we sail to. If you plan to do any of these excursions on land, check the forecast before you sail and pack according to the strenuousness of the activity you choose. Comfortable walking shoes are always a smart choice for sightseeing, city strolls, and guided tours.

Evening wear

Evenings are entirely up to you. Stay relaxed or elevate your look with collared shirts, tailored pants, stylish jeans, dresses, skirts, or your favorite vacation outfit. There are no formal attire requirements, just plenty of opportunities to wear something that makes you feel great.

Scarlet Night

Our signature Scarlet Night celebration is all about red. Whether you go all out or keep it simple with a splash of scarlet, there's no wrong way to join the fun.

Nightlife wear

Whether you're heading to The Manor to dance the night away or grabbing cocktails at our mixology hotspot On The Rocks, wear whatever makes you feel confident. Vacation memories tend to live forever in photos, so this is your chance to showcase your personal style.

Pack for warmer weather

No matter where you're sailing with us, it's always a good idea to pack for warm weather. Think sandals, swimsuits, sundresses, sun hats, breathable shirts, and lightweight fabrics that help keep you cool while exploring.

If you're heading to Santorini, a vibrant blue sundress or a crisp red linen shirt pairs beautifully with the island's iconic whitewashed architecture. Exploring Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan? A breezy outfit catches both the Caribbean sunshine and the sea breeze, making those vacation photos even more memorable.

Of course, photo-worthy outfits are only part of the equation. Comfort and practicality should always come first. The best vacation wardrobe is the one that lets you enjoy every moment with confidence.
